The abaya is a cultural thing, it stemmed from the requirements of an Islamic dress code: loose, modest, and subdued. Almost all of the neighboring Muslim countries have some form of the abaya that the women wear. Saudi Arabia’s signature happens to be black; the black abaya. It is merely their interpretation of a loose, modest, and subdued covering.
